Toledo Blade sheds light on Yaz birth control injuries, resulting lawsuits

The Toledo Blade recently ran an interesting piece about the dangerous side effects of Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella birth control pills.

Despite its rank as the top-selling birth control in the United States, Yaz has been found to increase the risk of blood clots more than other older birth control pills. 

All birth control pills carry the risk of certain side effects, including nausea, weight gain, depression and blood clots, which is why the FDA required all birth control brands to change their warning labels this past April. However, pills containing the hormone drospirenone pose a two- to three-times higher risk to women than traditional birth control pills do. Currently, the only pills on the market that contain drospirenone are Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella, BeYaz and their generics. 

The article also went on to discuss the 11,000 lawsuits that are currently pending nationwide, as women who have suffered severe injuries while taking Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella have filed claims against Bayer, the drugs’ manufacturer.

More lawsuits are expected, and according to a Businessweek article last month, Bayer is said to be paying out $100 million to settle 500 of the Yaz birth control injury cases.
